Academic Scepticism

Towards the end of the 4th Century BCE, the Academy in Athens changed. The Platonists moved away from the metaphysical speculations of the ‘untaught’ doctrines and embraced a line of sceptical thought. This drew on Socrates own inquisitive dialectical method and the earlier Pyrrhonist scepticism. As Rome eclipsed the Hellenic world, Platonic thought would continue to evolve with the emergence of Middle Platonism.
