Some time between the 7th and 4th Century BCE a Grammarian from the northern Indus river area wrote the first systematic grammatical treatise on Sanskrit – and perhaps the first such aphoristic grammar on any language! Panini has remained important not only in Sanskrit studies but also in modern linguistics – influencing such thinkers as Noam Chomsky.
