In the far south of India, a sage emerged sometime after the 2nd century CE Thiruvalluvar. He wrote in the Tamil tongue and his poetry, preserved in the short text the Kural, remains popular to this day – discoursing on such topics as statecraft, virtue and love. However, he remains a divisive figure as differing religious and political groups claim him for their own causes.
