Traditionally attributed to Kautilya, the royal advisor to the first of the Maurya emperors, the Arthashastra is a treatise on strategy and statecraft. Lost in the 12th century CE it was rediscovered at the beginning of the 20th century and has become a contentious work with scholars clashing over whether it is a machiavellian work on power or a kinder, more socialist work on the commonwealth.
