The Manusmriti, sometimes called the Book of Manu, is a late classical Sanskrit text dealing with the dharma – or duties – of differing Varna – classes – of Hindu society. Although it developed within a broader sub-genre of similar texts it rose to prominence as the Hindu law code under British rule. Since that time it has remained a contentious text due to its rulings on women, Shudras and Dalit communities.
